Trade and Cargo Crisis Draws Leaders to Miami
With US ports laying off idle workers, hundreds of cargo ships at anchor empty and air cargo at it lowest point since World War II, the World Trade Center Miami, the Port of Miami and Miami International Airport have invited industry leaders and government policy makers-- including President Barack Obama and US Trade Representative Ron Kirk-- to a historic conference in Miami Nov. 4- 6.

Intent on sharing ideas, building business and hearing the government’s solutions executives from the major air and sea cargo corporations serving the Western Hemisphere are lining up for the 10th Biennial Air Cargo Americas and the 4th SeaCargo Americas conference and exhibition sponsored by the Miami International Airport, the Port of Miami and the World Trade Center Miami. This is the first time the leaders of the two most high-value economic engines – air cargo and sea cargo – will be gathered in one hall to discuss major issues and opportunities.

The organizers of the conferences also expect that many top US government officials – some yet to be appointed -- will join dozens of leaders from Central America, South America, U.S. and the Caribbean to discuss trade, transport, security and logistics issues facing the industry. Charlotte Gallogly, President of the World Trade Center Miami said, “President Obama knows a good opportunity when he sees one. Miami in November will provide him the rare, historic chance to speak about his trade and security agenda to leaders of the hemisphere in trade and transport in one place at one time.” www.seacargoamericas.com www.aircargoamericas.com

NEWS IN THE AMERICAS

Amerijet Acquires Antonov Freighter Operator Avialeasing and Parent Company SRX
Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based Amerijet International acquired a ground handling cargo business in Central Asia called SRX International and its subsidiary Avialeasing Aviation, a cargo airline certificated in Uzbekistan. Terms of the transaction weren’t disclosed. Amerijet operates Boeing 727-200 and 767-200 freighters from its primary hub at Miami International Airport throughout the Americas, Mexico and the Caribbean and to destinations in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. From Uzbekistan and Miami, Avialeasing operates Antonov An-12 and An-26 freighter aircraft, which are specially designed for heavy and oversized cargo, such as oilfield equipment.

Amerijet’s acquisition is expected to “complement its cargo operations and support our energy sector customers both in the Americas and worldwide,” Amerijet chief executive officer David Bassett said in a prepared statement.http://sev.prnewswire.com/airlines-aviation/20090619/FL3546219062009-1.html

Chile and China Extend Trade Ties by Signing ‘Open Skies’ Agreement
The national governments of Chile and China agreed to make their bilateral aviation treaty more flexible. They recently signed an “open skies” agreement that liberalizes air traffic between the countries in terms of both passengers and cargo. The new agreement, allowing air travel between Chile and China to any destination within the countries, replaces a pact that had been in place since 1996, and it builds on the countries’ bilateral trade liberalization agreement in 2005.http://www.chinahospitalitynews.com/en/2009/06/19/12328-china-and-chile-sign-new-open-skies-agreement/

Global Decline in International Air Cargo Slows Down
A global decline in the volume of international air cargo slowed to 17.4 percent in May, compared to the same month last year, the International Air Transport Association reported. Year-over-year declines worldwide in international cargo volume had exceeded 20 percent from December through April, Geneva, Switzerland IATA reported. In Latin America, international air cargo volume in May was 21 percent below the same month last year, the worst regional performance in the world, followed by declines of 20 percent in Africa, 19.2 percent in Europe, 18.8 percent in North America, 18.1 percent in Asia Pacific and 3.7 percent in the Middle East.

“We may have hit bottom, but we are a long way from recovery,” Giovanni Bisignani, director general and chief executive officer of IATA, said in a press release. “Capacity is not aligned with demand.” http://www.iata.org/pressroom/pr/2009-06-25-01.htm

Uneven U.S.-Colombia Trade Reflects Tax Policy
Among the top five U.S. trade partners in Latin America, Colombia has been least affected by a broad decline in U.S. imports, the Latin Business Chronicle reported, citing Census Bureau data. U.S. exports to Colombia, however, have fallen faster than in many Latin American nations. The trend reflects trade policy. More than 5,000 products qualify for duty-free shipment from Colombia to the United States, U.S. shippers pay tariffs on goods they export o the South American country. An agreement promoting freer trade between the U.S. and Colombia was approved in 2006 but never ratified by Congress. http://www.latinbusinesschronicle.com/app/article.aspx?id=3496

TSA Deploys Cargo-Sniffing Canine Teams in Orlando
The federal Transportation Security Administration has deployed two TSA-trained canine teams for explosives detection at Orlando International Airport. It is the second Florida airport after Miami International Airport to get TSA canine teams, which undergo a rigorous 10-week training course at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. The TSA deploys canine teams primarily to search cargo bound for passenger aircraft. http://news.prnewswire.com/DisplayReleaseContent.aspx?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/06-25-2009/0005050629&EDATE=
