Historic Cargo Event Scheduled for November 2-4, 2011
Thousands of air cargo and sea cargo industry leaders and experts will gather in Miami for a concurrent conference and exhibition on November 2-4, 2011. Executives from the major aviation, logistics and sea cargo corporations serving the Western Hemisphere are already lining up for the conference and exhibition sponsored by the Miami International Airport, the Port of Miami and the World Trade Center Miami.

The Port of Miami and Miami International Airport will again host Air Cargo & SeaCargo Americas. The ports, under the leadership of Bill Johnson and Jose Abreu have supported the event since its inception. Both men believe that the event will increase two-way cargo growth for the Americas by providing a world class forum on international aviation, maritime and logistics issues and showcasing the latest aviation, maritime and security products, e-commerce solutions, technologies and services.

British Airways and LAN Airlines reach settlements in civil case
Jun 7 - British Airways and LAN Airlines have reached settlements in a class-action lawsuit brought by Hausfeld LLP against 42 airlines that originated as a result of the U.S. Department of Justice's (DOJ) ongoing price-fixing investigations. British Airways agreed to pay more than $89 million. LAN Cargo, LAN Airlines and the company's affiliate in Brazil, Aerolinhas Brasileiras S.A., settled for a total of $66 million.

IATA's outlook bleak despite strong Asia-Pacific performance
Jun 7 - Attendees of the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) 67th Annual General Meeting in Singapore received some dismal news during the conference: The association reduced its 2011 aviation profit forecast by a staggering 54 percent. Sky-high fuel prices, political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, and an abundance of natural disasters are to blame.

Study cites myriad challenges shippers experience from ‘slow steaming’
Jun 6 - While the practice of "slow steaming" by ocean carriers has become more commonplace in an effort to reduce fuel costs, shippers are not necessarily enthused about its subsequent effects on their supply chains.

Jun 3 - With the goal of reaching a potential movement of 3.5 million TEUs, the Port of Rio de Janeiro announced project to expanded its terminals container movement capacity.

Brazil registered a positive trade balance in May
Jun 3 - Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce informed that Brazil registered a positive trade balance of US$ 3.529 billion. Exports were US$23.211 billion and Imports US$19.682 billion.

JAL, AA Cargo beef up cargo relationship
Jun 2 - Japan Airlines and American Airlines have enhanced their cargo relationship, routing freight through five key cities in the U.S. and three Japanese cities. The agreement also means that Honolulu is now a key hub for the transfer of cargo between the Americas and Asia.

FedEx launches direct service to Colombia
May 31 - FedEx Express has commenced direct service to Colombia and will create more than 200 jobs in the country over the next two years. The company has been providing service to Colombians since 1993, but has only worked through a dedicated provider; FedEx will now oversee all aspects of shipping to the Latin American country.

May 31 - It seems the Sinergy Group of German Efromovich may be interested in acquiring a second cargo airline to reinforce Tampa Cargo in expanding its route coverage.

Turkish Cargo off to strong start in 2011
May 26 - Turkish Cargo carried 119,770 tonnes of cargo during the four-month period from January to April, a 21.6 percent year-over-year increase. Among the carrier’s new developments is a plan to establish Barcelona El Prat Airport as a hub for flights from Istanbul to Latin America.

Boeing executive speaks out on Latin American airfreight growth
May 24 - In addition to projecting that Latin America will emerge as an aviation hotspot in the coming decades, Boeing has singled out Brazil as a key nation contributing to its growth. But it’s Brazil’s presence in the airfreight market that really has one Boeing executive talking.

MEET THE CONFERENCE SPEAKERS & MODERATORS

Albert Saphir, President of South Florida Council of Supply Management Professionals Roundtable
Albert Saphir holds the German equivalent of a BS in International Transportation and is a consultant with 30 years of management experience in international air and ocean freight forwarding, domestic and international transportation management, domestic and international parcel shipping and benchmarking, logistics and supply chain analysis, trade compliance and customs security compliance.

He has worked in sales and operations management positions for multi-national logistics companies such as Danzas (now known as DHL Global Forwarding), Panalpina and Agility, and was Vice President and a partner for regional companies during his career in freight forwarding in Germany and the U.S.

He now is an independent logistics and supply chain security consultant for domestic and international manufacturers, distributors, importers, exporters and global transportation companies. His work focuses on transportation negotiations and procurement, value analysis, freight and audit/billing management for all modes of domestic or international transport.

Bill Johnson, Port Direct, Port of Miami
Bill Johnson is Port Director at the Port of Miami. He has over 30 years of management experience with Miami-Dade County government and has served as a senior member of the County Manager’s executive staff since January 1995. Over the years, his responsibilities have included oversight of the County’s Aviation Department, Department of Procurement Management, the Department of Business Development, and Miami-Dade Transit, as well as liaison with the Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Florida Department of Transportation (District Six). He earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee.

Jane Bussey, Editorial Director, Latin Trade
Jane is a staff writer for The Miami Herald, covering trade business and economics with a focus on Latin America. She has traveled extensively throughout Latin America to write about banking and financial crises, social unrest, corporate strategies and the results of globalization. Her trade coverage has taken her to regional and global trade talks, and most recently focused on the growing role of China in Latin America. Her stories of the 2001 Argentine financial crisis were part of a Herald team prize from the Overseas Press Club. Previously she worked as a journalist in Mexico and Central America. She received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a master’s degree in Latin American Studies from Stanford University.

Jose Perez-Jones, Senior Vice President, Seaboard Marine
José Pérez-Jones’ experience in the maritime industry dates back to 1967, beginning with Chester, Blackbum & Roder/Pan Atlantic Lines, where he reached the position of Corporate Sales Manager. In 1983, he was one of the founding members of Seaboard Marine, the largest ocean carrier through the Port of Miami. As Vice President of Sales and Marketing, he was responsible for developing all sales to and from the US, Central/South America, the Eastern Caribbean and the intra-regional cargo between these countries. Pérez-Jones is an active member of the local shipping community in Miami. He graduated from Miami-Dade College.
